"Hey" Stacks! A Thanksgiving Cooking Activity for Kids

My proud grandchildren, ready to share their bowl of haystacks with their great-granddaddy

It's easy to come up with a list of people we are thankful for, but putting actions behind our words helps them know they are loved and appreciated. This is the kind of gratitude we want our children to express. Bring the kids to the kitchen for a simple cooking activity and plan a visit to someone who needs to know they are loved on Thanksgiving and every day!

HAYSTACKS

INGREDIENTS

  • (2) 11-ounce packages butterscotch chips

  • (1) 12-ounce package chow mein noodles

  • 3 cups dry roasted peanuts

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine chow mein noodles and peanuts in a large bowl.

Melt butterscotch chips in a separate bowl in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between bursts, until melted. (Check often to avoid burning.)

Use a rubber spatula to fold the melted butterscotch into the bowl of noodles and peanuts.

Mix until noodles are coated.

Use a tablespoon measure to scoop out the haystacks. (OR... Wash hands and rub them with a bit of cooking oil to prevent the mixture from sticking. Use the "pinch and place" method: Pinch tablespoon-sized clusters of the mix and place them on the wax paper.)

Allow haystacks to harden before placing them into containers for sharing!

My grandchildren enjoyed making haystacks during our recent stay in this mountain cabin. I hope you and your children will enjoy this activity too. It's soooo easy! Take a peek at our video...
