Here's my own story... Was it too late?
I remember checking off the last things on the list of "must haves" as I helped my daughter pack up for college.
• toiletries...... Check
• hair dryer..... check
• desk lamp.... check
Finally, the boxes were full, the checklist completed, my labor to get her ready for college... done.
Somehow, it just didn't feel "done".
The walk to the door was slow and emotionally gripping. Inside the boxes were all the necessities for her new life outside our home. But as Leslie walked down the steps for the last time as a resident of our home, I wondered, was the stuff inside the boxes enough?
I once heard it said, "From the day parents bring their baby home from the hospital, they have one goal.... To prepare them to leave it." I needed to meditate on that for a while.
There was a whirlwind of lessons between the eighteen years my husband and I brought our baby girl home from the hospital to the day we walked her to the car headed for college. We experienced the joy of teaching her to walk, talk, and tie her shoes. We pushed through the challenges of insisting she eat her vegetables, learn the multiplication table, and use good manners. Almost everything we did had something to do with helping her learn what she needed to know before she left our home as a young adult.
If our goal was for Leslie to become a financially successful, well-respected member of society, perhaps we'd done enough. But we wanted more for her. We wanted to send her away with a firm spiritual foundation that would ground her in God's Word and set her compass to point back to Him whenever storms of life pushed against her sails. I couldn't pack that in a box. There would be no more life lessons under our roof. It was time to turn her over to the world.
Indeed, there were storms that pounded on Leslie's foundations. Though tossed about, she knew the sound of her Shepherd's voice when He called her back home. For some, the wait is long. There is comfort in knowing that even in the midst of storms, strong foundations still stand.
Our children are under our wings for eighteen of the most important years of their lives. The window of time for foundation building is small. While we don't have the power to turn their hearts of stone into hearts of flesh, we can provide an environment where God can do His work. I've often heard it said, "We provide the kindling. The Holy Spirit lights the fire."
Remember this when you're tempted to ignore teachable moments and fill time with activities that have no eternal impact. Don't wait until it's too late! Begin building firm spiritual foundations now. Before you know it, you'll be helping your children pack their bags to head out into the big world. Send them away grounded in the truth of God's Word!
